I Love FalafelMay 11th, 2010 by ChrisEvery city needs a place with good falafel. Lucky for us, we have J.J.’s Kabob and Pizzeria on River Street. To be honest, my favorite item at J.J.’s is the hummus: I could honestly eat the hummus until it was coming out of my ears. The only drawback is that you might not get enough pita bread for dipping but fear not: this stuff goes great on your falafel wrap too. The falafel comes wrapped in a tidy pita with pickles, onions, lettuce, and tomatoes. If you thought Cosmic Amanda chowing down on a burrito from Tacos Lupitas was a sight to see – then me eating one of these is downright pornographic. Thankfully, there is no video evidence to prove this claim. Unfortunately, J.J.’s is closed on Sundays because I think it’s a law that any establishment in Haverhill must have weird business hours. Downtown fill in the blankMay 8th, 2010 by Cosmic AmandaHas anyone else noticed this prime spot up for lease on Washington St? Well, I did, and I just had to snap a few photos because this shop has super cute curb appeal and looks like it has a lot of potential inside for something great! And here’s a peek inside: Previously, 15 Washington St. was the home of Leaf and Ladle (circa 2008), followed by Ava’s Salads and More, although when we peeked in the windows it looked like it may have been a bakery even more recently than that. So, I’m thinking maybe another food-centric business at this location isn’t such a hot idea. And no offense, Haverhill, but I think we have enough hair salons and barber shops. So, what to put in there? I’d kill for a cool vintage clothing store like Modern Millie in Salem and Newburyport. Or maybe some sort of home decor/gadget shop where I could run to and grab a nice gift in a pinch. Wine shop? Yarn store? Another coffee shop? Art house movie theatre? (not sure how big that second room is) Why, the possibilities are endless! What do you wish would move in?

Haverhill by numbersMay 6th, 2010 by Cosmic AmandaHaverhill has its own establishment naming convention blossoming downtown. That is, there seems to be a higher concentration of businesses named after the service they offer plus the address of their location than anywhere else I’ve ever visited. Here are a few examples: And this revelation led me to wander around for a couple hours just looking for really cool numbers. Downtown Haverhill Pro Tip: If you’re ever on the Merrimack St. end of downtown and feel a deuce coming on, there’s a very special place you can go… Conversely, If you ever want to be sure your visit downtown does NOT include having to look at piles of human excrement (and I won’t even get into the tighty-formerly-whities we found) you’re best to avoid the rear right stairwell in the parking garage. Wheeeeere’s the Bepp?May 5th, 2010 by Cosmic AmandaTonight we went for a stroll around downtown, to witness the inception of so many Hangovers de Mayo. As we ambled down Merrimack St. I was suddenly struck with a terrible sense of foreboding. Something was amiss- I could just feel it. I glanced across the street for a comforting landmark and… WHAT THE!? THEY TOOK DOWN THE BEPPERS SIGN! Oh, snap! And to think, just the other day I was reading about the would-be gentrification of the local web. What if that idea went one step further and the local web actually gentrified the city? Could what has happened here be a direct result of Chris blogging about sub-par produce? In reality, judging from the new lettering in the window, it looks like the shop just changed ownership and some new signage is in order. But, maybe I’ll let Chris sweat this one out a little.

Half Nelson, full Nelson, Willie NelsonMay 4th, 2010 by Cosmic AmandaOkay, first, for an enhanced blog experience, go here and start this post-appropriate little ditty. Nice, huh? I thought so. Having come of age during the height of Hulkamania, some of my fondest childhood memories involve pro wrestling. For example, I’d race my Huffy Sweet Thunder up the block every time I heard the distant jingle of the Mister Softee truck just to get my grubby hands on a WWF Superstars ice cream bar before they sold out. (Somehow, I remember forever being stuck with the George “The Animal” Steele bar. Sigh!) But, I digress… This past Sunday, unbeknownst to the now-somewhat-adult me, KidsFest 2010 took place downtown, and one of the highlights was…you guessed it…a real live pro wrestling demonstration! The Championship Wrestling Association was grappling away right in the Haverhill Bank parking lot on Merrimack St! I could have met the new CWA Heavyweight Champion Corporal Gunz, “The Granite State Destroyer”! Unbelievable bummer! Luckily, our friend A.A.S. on Flickr was there and caught a few choice shots of the action: How about we zoom right in on the main event? Considering how hot and muggy it was Sunday, I am uber impressed by how cool these guys look. And I’m not just talking about those sweet zebra-striped spandex, either. Rawr! Hopefully these guys will make another appearance soon. Did anyone else catch the action? How was it? Merrimack Valley Nerd Alert!May 3rd, 2010 by Cosmic AmandaI was checking out the music section at Target this evening, when I came across this: some poor high school nerd left his pre-calculus flash cards behind! How do I know they belong to a nerd? Look where they ended up…on the sweetest keyboard in all of Target. You tell me this kid didn’t feast his eyes on this glossy-keyed beauty and immediately set down the cards, inwardly gasp and push in his glasses, then get completely lost in some sweet John Tesh fantasy. So, what was I doing in the keyboard section at Target? Er, I was, uhhhhh, picking up blank cds for my weekly college radio show. Yeah, that’s the ticket!

Haverhill Got a Little Less Comfort-ableMay 2nd, 2010 by ChrisFamous chickens everywhere are breathing a sigh of relief. ‘David’s Famous Chicken Pies’ has apparently shut it’s door after seven years. My wife and I are vegetarians but we were intrigued by the flyer advertising baked mac & cheese, mashed sweet potato, fried ravioli, and all sorts of delicious comfort food sides. So, on Saturday we head over the bridge to Bradford only to be confronted by:
And:
I called the contact number from their still-functional but Flash-only website and was told by an automated message that they have closed the retail end of their business to focus on the wholesale side. No chicken pie for you! Aerosol AcrobaticsMay 1st, 2010 by ChrisI can’t really decipher what most of this graffiti says but I definitely admire the effort that went into scaling this building by Winter Street.
