No admission, just come down and clink steins with the brewers and all your friends. Make sure to come down early as some of these beers will definitely run out!

It’s supposed to be a warm and sorta-sunny afternoon on Saturday, so good luck snagging a spot on the coveted deck. Check out the Facebook invite and see if there’s someone you can trick into saving you a seat!

Reggae hip hop ninja assassins!

April 28th, 2010 by

Since starting this blog, a lot of people have told us we just HAD to feature local reggae band Merrimack Delta Dub Set. “Reggae band? In Haverhill? For real?” I thought. “Oh yes, me,” I replied in my own head, “totally for real.”

I knew right then we had to talk to them immediately.

Luckily, we caught up with Sean Stanton, founding member of Merrimack Delta Dub Set, after their last gig at the Chit Chat Lounge and got to ask him a few questions. Enjoy!

Not the actual Merrimack Delta Dub Set

HF: So, first off, if you guys are supposed to be “reggae hip hop ninja assassins,” why do you wear jeans and t-shirts? Shouldn’t you be running around in something…I don’t know, a bit more stealth?

MDDS: Even Superman had to wear a disguise to fit in. Our costume just so happens to be t-shirts and jeans.

HF: How long have you guys been playing together? Tell me a bit about the genesis of the band.

MDDS: I had written a few songs and and as I soon as I turned 21 I did the open mic night at the Chit Chat Lounge on Washington St. every single Tuesday. This was early in 2008. We started as a 3-piece, just me, Alan, and Nate (guitar, bass, drums) and just built it from there. First by adding MC and good friend, OD. When I broke my wrist before an important New Year’s gig, we figured we would need Matt to fill in on guitar, but it turned out I could still play with the brace and we got a kick-ass lead guitarist instead. Then one night at Kelley’s Pub, Clark just showed up with his sax and blew us all away.

So to make a long story short, our original drummer left and now the line-up is me (Seamus)- vocals/guitar, OD – vocals,  Alan on bass, Matt – lead guitar, Adam on drums and Clark – saxophone.

HF: What’s your process like for writing new material?

MDDS: We just jam and things evolve. Either Matt will have some lick, or I’ll have some rhytmn, or Alan will come through with a new bass line. Reggae is a simple music, with a lot of open space. This allows us to start with something very basic and take it pretty much anywhere. It’s really our favorite part of practice.

HF: Are you currently working on any big goals or  plans for the band?

MDDS: Right now it’s to get our EP “Cover to Cover” out there, because we have another EP’s worth of new songs waiting in the wings. Once that’s taken care of, then it’s time to get to work. We want to spread out and gig in different parts of New England. Starting with places like southern Mass and Rhode Island, Manchester, NH.  and Amherst, MA. And working our way west and south trying to hit up NYC and places like VA and FL. But in the meantime we’re just doing what we gotta do.

So on that note, keep an ear out for Merrimack Delta Dub Set’s debut EP “COVER TO COVER”!!!!

The actual Merrimack Delta Dub Set at the Chit Chat Lounge

HF: Soooo, onto the music itself. What else should people associate reggae with…besides pot?

MDDS: Well, traditional roots reggae is essentially a Jamaican form of gospel music, so with that in mind, it should be associated with positivity above all else. Gospel, after all, means “good news”. We’re also influenced by some of the dancehall reggae. Can you guess what that’s all about? Reggae has got to be the most danceable form of music today, which makes it easier for the audience to connect with the performers.

HF: Do you remember – when we used to sit in the government yard in Trenchtown?

MDDS:
Pick up your bags and get your ticket
Don’t hang around or you will miss it
This is the King Sound, whole world love it
Sweet reggae music, make you so fit
Hey hey rock with the vibe, don’t disturb it
Move with the beat and groove with it
Bubble and settle bit by bit
Stay with the rhythm, don’t quit
-Steel Pulse

HF: Why do you think Bob Marley had all those chains and shackles on him when he came back to haunt Scrooge?

MDDS: I think that was Jacob Marley. I’m not sure if there is any relation, but Bob does have a lot of children.

Fussin' and fightin'...with Scrooge?

HF: What other kinds of music are you guys into?

MDDS: You name it. When you take all six members into account, you get everything from classical and jazz to boston punk and hardcore. Classic rock, Rap, Bluegrass, Ska, Doo-Whop, R&B, Funk, Afrobeat, Electronic, and of course Reggae-Hip Hop.

HF: I hear that Matt has really huge…um, record collection. Could you tell me something about that?

MDDS:
The only thing I can tell you is that a great deal of our power is derived from Matt’s record collection. Between myself and Matt, you’ll get all you can handle and then some . . . unless you have a crate, then you can handle a lot.

HF: What’s your favorite thing about Haverhill?

MDDS: Free parking and the best live music.

HF: Hey, quick, before we go- who would win in a fight: Peter Tosh or Super Cat?

MDDS: Tosh all day. Motherfucker had an AK-47 guitar; you know that ain’t all he’s got. Plus, Super Cat can’t really fly.

HF: It was great chatting with you, Sean. I can’t wait to see Merrimack Delta Dub Set for myself. When’s the next show?

MDDS: Friday May 14th @ Chit Chat Lounge, in sunny downtown Haverhill, MA. Our debut EP entitled “Cover to Cover” is being produced as you read this, so the next show is probably going to be the CD Release Party @ The Chit Chat, barring any unforeseen delays. So keep an ear to the streets!

You heard it here, folks! Chit Chat Lounge: May 14. If you haven’t already seen these guys live and want to catch a whiff of what they’re stepping in, check out the Merrimack Delta Dub Set on MySpace and Facebook.

Epic Haverhill missed connection

April 27th, 2010 by

Since Haverhill is without a subway system or more than one Starbucks, I was shocked to see how many missed connections the Shoe City is home to. Well, maybe it’s not the quantity as much as the quality.

If you’re a lady who loves the feel of the wheel, Fidel Castro, or simply tall and hot, there may be a lovelorn person currently looking for you.

Far and away, this has to be the most visually epic missed connection I’ve ever seen anywhere. Way to go, Haverhill!

Perhaps the greatest missed connection of all times.

I sincerely hope this guy finds who he’s looking for. In the meantime, I think I’m about to post a missed connection for that amazing fez!

Cure for a case of the Mondays: Evenfall

April 26th, 2010 by

Monday is a pretty tough day of the week to be a hungry Haverillian. No Tacos Lupita. No Tap. Sigh.

Okay, look, I promised myself I’d stop “reviewing” Haverhill’s restaurants in such rapid succession because all of this gluttony is going to spoil my girlish figure. (especially considering I only believe in two forms of exercise- dog walks and dance parties)

But Evenfall‘s systematic tweeting about its “Monday night bar bites” special has made me hyper-aware of its existence, so when a friend suggested dinner, we headed straight down 125 to take a bite of destiny.

First off, am I the only one who immediately starts Pearl Jammin’ in my mind every time I think of this place? “oOooh, Evenfall…bread arrives, it’s butter-y. Mmmm.” (Okay, maybe it’s just me.)

Moving along, the atmosphere in the lounge is great. Seats at the bar, a few high tops, and several clusters of comfy chairs/couches.

Photo yoinked from the Evenfall Web site.

This was actually my first foray into the lounge, so forgive me if this is old news, but I’m kind of a fan of the big eyed lady paintings, especially the large “fly-eye view”  on the wall opposite the bar. I’m also predisposed to like anyplace that serves Hendrick’s Gin and can we talk about the soundtrack they have going on for a second? Buena Vista Social Club to Matisyahu to Bjork to a classical guitar rendition of Stairway to Heaven. Whaaaat?

Burger bar bites (3rd one de-tomatoed by Mr. Cosmic)

Spiro is a genius for going with the bar bites concept, because as tasty as they were (and only $1!  Plus your first is free if you check in on foursquare!) they’ll only leave you wanting more. We quickly moved on to the main event. My friend got the mozzarella and tomato panini, and that looked great. I had the Maine crab salad, which is accompanied by a nice mix of greens, crisp asparagus, and radishes. The short ribs are pure fall-off-the-bone deliciousness, so I made my husband share one of his with me…

*If yours actually resembles this, consult your doctor.

Okay, TOTALLY didn’t mean to do that, but then we got the giggles and I had to take a photo.

Luckily, Evenfall doesn’t seem to take itself too seriously, either, so I’m pretty sure we’re not barred from stopping by again next Monday. (Right, guys?)

Brilliant Bradford vs. Hueful Haverhill

April 25th, 2010 by

It’s time I gave my home base of Bradford a little love.  Sure, sure, we’re officially “a former town,” and now exist only as a neighborhood within greater Haverhill. But, we still cling to our small town dreams, even managing to hold on to our very own zip code and exit off of 495.

Bradford is the sleepier, suburban side of Haverhill.  I love the mix of cozy bungalows, farm houses, and victorian homes (often on the same street), and the fact that a few streets still retain the old fashioned street lamps.

I moved here with my husband so we could have a house with a yard and a dog that we could walk through a quiet neighborhood, and happily, it’s mission accomplished. Yesterday the weather was so nice we spent most of the day enjoying all three of those things, and I brought along my camera to document some of  the colorful things we encountered along the way.

Close-up of some purple porch pansies.

Bucket of tulips: no witty caption required.

Then I rounded the corner and, Oh, wow! It looks like one of THE SHOES has retired to my neighborhood! Pretty cool, and definitely colorful. I wonder what it’s doing hanging out in Bradford next to a pile of trash?

City ordinance: all giant fiberglass shoe waste must be taken to Primrose St.

And just so the downtown won’t get jealous, here are a few more urban colorful spots we’ve encountered on our weekend walks.

Um, aren't you going to tag "excuse me?"

I’m really digging this rainbow, affixed to the wall along the river behind Merrimack St. Those are some pretty groovy clouds. What do you suppose is at the other end?

Try a slice of one man’s dream: Romano’s

April 23rd, 2010 by

On Wednesday night I was on Primrose Street picking up some new comic books when I noticed the following sign:

Romano's "dares to be different."

I just had to find out for the people of Haverhill – just how daring and different is Romano’s?  So, we put together a set of questions and sent them off to co-owner Robert Greatorex.

Robert Greatorex* gave his left forearm so you could have delicious pizza. (*not actually Robert Greatorex)

1. Being next to the Comic Book Palace – are you extra busy on Wednesday when new comics come out?

Yes. We see the same people every week from the Comic Book Palace on Wednesdays.  I never knew that many people read comics.

2. I’ve heard there’s a PBJ Chicken Wing in town – any plans for a PBJ Pizza?

Funny you ask – I had PBJ pizza in Disney years ago and we have made it several times at the store, it is delicious!!!!!!

3. What do you guys mean when you say you ‘dare to be different?’

We are willing to try different things: new pizzas all the time – even a chocolate pizza. We even made a sloppy joe pizza one night.

4. So, then what separates Romano’s from the other pizza places in town?

Mainly the cheese we use. It is Grande cheese, which is the best mozzarella you can buy. It is pricey – but it is worth it!!!!

Pizza as still life.

5. What is the state of pizza in Haverhill today?

Very competetive, lots of pizza places to choose from.  So, we must consistently make a great product to keep the customers coming in the door.

6. How late are you open on the weekends?

Friday and Saturday open until 10pm, and on Sundays we close at 8pm.

7. What’s Ray Romano like in real life?

Honestly, I dont know, I bet he is a blast though.

8. What made you guys want to get into the pizza business?

I have been doing this since I was 20 – I love it. So, I decided to take a chance and open one of my own.

9. Can I get a free pizza?

YES you can , but only 1 , business is business – LOL.

It's about to get REAL.

10. Who would win in a fight between the Domino’s Noid and Papa John?

I say the Noid takes out Papa John and makes him tapout.

11. Any chance you would name a pizza ‘The Haverhill Fever?’

I’ve given this some though, and yes – how does buffalo chicken and jalepenos sound?

———–

And with that – Haverhill Fever and Romano’s are proud to announce that you can now order a HAVERHILL FEVER pizza at Romano’s! Starting tonight!

It features buffalo chicken, spicy banana peppers, red pepper flakes, tomato sauce, and mozzarella cheese. It will be sure to get your temperature to rise.

As Robert said: ‘Try it if you dare!’

Give Romano’s a call tonight and try out this tasty new pie – 978-373-9906.

Not a newsflash: Tacos Lupita is amazing.

April 21st, 2010 by

I’ve been doing a lot of important research for the blog these days, in the form of wandering down to Tacos Lupita and completely demolishing a chicken burrito in the most unlady-like manner possible. (Short of lying down on the counter and having them ladle the ingredients directly into my mouth. Can’t say I haven’t daydreamed, though.)

Tacos Lupita, 194 River St. Haverhill

I figured eventually, I’d have some sort of epiphany while stuffing my face, and be able to encapsulate the Tacos Lupita experience in a way that had never been done before.

I mean, what can I really say about this place that hasn’t already been Yelped or blogged? Best burritos this side of San Francisco? Said. Inexpensive, fresh, and delicious? Stated. Holy cow, there’s a party in my mouth and everyone’s putting their keys in a bowl? Exclaimed. (Okay, maybe that last one is an Amanda original, but don’t tell me you haven’t thought it.)

There’s simply no way I can  express in words the downright ambrosial experience of biting into a Tacos Lupita burrito that at this point wouldn’t seem totally cliché.

So instead, here’s an animated gif:

NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM

(PS- can we all chip in and throw a few more five star reviews Tacos Lupita‘s way? I can’t believe they only get four just because this guy prefers Chipotle’s.  Laaaame.)

More back alley shenanigans

April 20th, 2010 by

Apparently, Jeremiah True, the guy who lives under the 125 bridge, and I aren’t the only ones who like to hang out in the service corridor behind Merrimack St. Aimee (Nascartrophywifey on flickr) has been spending some time back there too, and she and her friends echo my sentiments exactly:

"Don't tell her she can't do it."

Aimee et al had a pretty sweet looking weekend in the ‘verill while I was out of town- and I have to say, I’m more than a little envious of the sweet  mugs they snagged (at Jennie’s?). Ah well, even though they yoinked the choice thrift store treasure from my ‘hood, I’m happy to see some fun-loving people coming to visit.

And, maybe this whole Haverhill Fever Back Alley Riverwalk idea has some traction. What do you think, guys?

Newsflash: River’s Edge Farm has moved right next to the…what?

April 18th, 2010 by

I just returned from an epic weekend at the Tromadance film festival in Asbury Park, NJ, which I lovingly dubbed “Haverhill-by-the-Shore.” (though admittedly they’re a bit further along in the transition.) I was greeted by this postcard:

Come for the mulch, stay for the llammmsS'ss.

Visit us by the llam’s? I’m assuming they mean llamas? I flipped the card over to double check and…d’oh!

Find us next to Lorenzo Lamas!

Said Jeremy the Cheeseburger guy, “They seem to be very possessive animals as well.”

But, all joking aside, I love these fine folks. While I’m bummed they moved from their Salem St. location, (since now I can’t brag that Bradford’s great ’cause I can walk a mile in one direction and be smack dab in the middle of downtown, or walk a mile in the opposite direction and hit this nice little farm stand)  I won’t hold it against them. They still have my yearly mulch order on lock.
